I will be thoroughly waterproof sealing the finished tiles and grouting upon completion. No mention of any vapour barrier needed, and I never thought about it until I read the preceeding post. I explained that I had bare studs on the bath ends now and a masonry block wall, and he recommended 1/2" tilebacker board for the ends and 1/4" tilebacker board for the long wall. When I was at our local big-box store and talking to the sales guy in the tiling area, he never mentioned anything about needing a vapour barrier. These were professionally built townhouses built in mid-1970s, approx 90 units in the complex all built at one time, so I'm assuming that this process was used in all the units.Īnyway, fast forward 30-something yrs to today. Doesn't look like any thinset used at all, and no vapour barrier at all. On the ends of the tub (handles/tub spout/diverter/shower rose at one end, blank wall except for a towel rail at the other end), the tiling was glued onto plasterboard. No sign of any kind of vapour barrier seen. When I tore off the old 70's tiling that was surrounding the tub, the long wall (5 ft face) had tiles that were mortared to a white plaster-ish looking coat approx 1/8" thick (not a board, but some kind of plaster mixture applied to the masonry block wall). Bathtub substrates :ends were sheetrock, main 5ft wall is a masonry block party wall with our neighbour. Many thanks to put it simple, the door should open away from you, not towards you. I'm about halfway through renovating our #2 bathroom - gutted it except for the bathtub. One side does have hinges (which shouldnt be visible to see outside in my opinion) but the other side has the handle for looking slot (where you could see who is at the door, which also shouldnt be pointed to the outside). Looking at that last post has me very worried now.
